Went Over Like a Lead Balloon

Yep, talking about Ukraine being granted Membership Action Plan. Bush criticized for being true to himself and pleading for eastern expansion. There were countries in support of Ukraine being granted MAP but imo little hope that France or Germany will reverse their positions, at this point.

Consoling myself by reading the following "Ukrainian Membership in Nato: Benefits, Costs, Misconceptions and Urban Legends" and dreaming of Berlin, next year. And a blast from the past, "Following the 2004 elections, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer stated that “Our overriding goal – to assist Ukraine to realize its Euro-Atlantic aspirations and to promote stability in the region – remains unchanged”." Hmm, funny that he said something similar just a few days ago, and yet here it is four years later and no change in Nato.

And imo although Poland's President did support the initiative, there was a reverse esp. as Ukraine's President stated categorically that missile defense shield aka military bases, would not be on Ukrainian soil (which would leave it in Poland.)

Unless Ukraine goes into Nato, "Welcome to Ukraine: the buffer zone" (but without the EU funding and under righting.)

"no change in NATO"

IIU, no change in Ukraine either.

I stress again - God helps those who help themselves.

And there are many, many people pulling for Ukraine, more than you know.

Ukrainians can't just sit back and hope and wring their hands and wish that someone else does their job for them.

Ukrainians have to do it themselves.

And this was not a total rejection - just a postponement.

elmer - my point was that the postponement has been since 2004 and regardless of how often it is stated or published, in survey polls the percentages of those in approval for Nato were the same in Poland as in other countries prior to their being admitted was the same of that in Ukraine today --- and yet, was not a boundary in those other cases. imo it is a blind aka smoke and mirrors. Which is why ex-Soviet countries which have entered into Nato are soundly in favor of Ukraine's entrance. If public disapproval was such a barrier ought not these states be most aware of the consequences, having lived through it themselves? but they are well aware the sham that it is and are most aware of the importance of Ukraine and Georgia being given MAP.

And the Polish president stood firm and blasted Germany for it being against Ukraine and Georgia being offered MAP. "the Polish leader reproached Germany that it forgot the history. According to L.Kaczynski, in 1955, NATO accepted FRG, despite its borders were recognized by not all European countries, and the world was jeopardized with an eventual military conflict due to the situation in the divided Berlin. That time, L.Kaczynski believes, the Alliance, despite all the risks, made a “courageous decision”. “The memory about this undermines the arguments of those speaking against allowing Ukraine and Georgia to join the NATO MAP”, the Polish President stressed."

It is NOT an open door policy, if you are denying to others, what you openly are a part of and enjoy the privileges of - how much does Germany save on its defenses because of Nato?

And let's not forget UK's 'lukewarm' attitude toward Ukraine and Gerogia being offered MAP. "Mr Brown supports the two states' bid for MAP status but his spokesman said the UK would want to discuss the exact timing with allies."
