Playing with blocks: Molecular Chemistry

Formation of the new government:

Aside from the predicted, prolonged legal challenges and 'Maidans' that may occur to influence the proceedings, it is clear that the different blocks to play with are Party of Regions (PoR), Tymoshenko Bloc (BYT), Our Ukraine-People's Self Defense (OU-PSD), Communist Party of Ukraine (CPU) and Lytvyn Bloc (L).

Of course the chances of the following: PoR+ByT+OU+C+L are nil.

PoR+C is a definite. ByT+OU, have made prior announcements but have yet to finalize the details and L is most importantly up in the air, with most assessments moving it to ByT+OU. So, what is next - press conferences which will hopefully clarify who will be doing what, when.

What would be 'major upsets'? Either PoR+OU or PoR+ByT.

PoR members have expressed that anyone who gets the majority vote has first crack at coalition formation. There is no such law (to my knowledge) and it all depends on who obtains the golden number of at least 226 seats, forms a new Cabinet and presents their chosen PM to President. Past events indicate that any foot-dragging has only been to the benefit of PoR. And will we see deputys again wooed away from political parties? with no 'special' elections for at least 18 months, this is a really big opportunity for potential cash advances.

Regarding Socialist Party of Ukraine (SPU), it could come back into play but with such close watch being kept on the numbers and declarations of "free and fair elections", it will take a miracle. But still could happen though I am swayed by the Itar-Tass report that SPU will not cross 3% announced yesterday.

I see where the Russians have offered their 'congratulations' to the Orange bloc: Gasprom is cutting gas supplies unless Ukraine forks over a lot of money.

It was stated that should Tymoshenko become PM the gas would be turned off. I guess they believe that she will become PM ?
Or is this their firing salvo? they r not stating in definite.

It makes them happy.
