Just a quick comment, with thanks to those comments before my own for their view points.

My interpretation of the grandfather's suicide was a justaposition against JSF's aunt's character. He (the grandfather) tried to run from his past/heritage, while she (the aunt) stated to pick up the pieces of her ruined village, both literally and figuratively.

I thought the message in his suicide is you cannot escape your past/heritage, you cannot deny who you are. His decision to die was his acknowledgement that this was the case. I saw this as a return to his roots, and acceptance of both who he was, and where he belonged.

Great film, to my mind. Very thought-provoking. I came away with an appreciation of the value of family, and each day you share with them.

One final comment, I didn't come out of this film with any impression that it reflected poorly on Ukranians. If anything, I thought it was an interesting introduction to the culture. Of course, I'm a Brit, living in the USA, so perhaps I'm just oblivious to any intended slights present in the film.... :)

The (1) Reader Comment is only MAYBE 30% true and considerably simplistic. I agree there is a lot of corruption and fraud involved but the sex business in Ukraine is no different than it is anywhere in the world.
The big difference in Ukraine and basically all OLD RUSSIA countries is caused by INCREDIBLE POVERTY, HISTORIC MALE DOMINATED SOCIETY, TERRIBLE LIVING STANDARDS, EXCESS MALE ALCOHOLISM RESULTING IN LARGE DIFFERENCE OF LIFE SPAN BETWEEN MALE AND FEMALE, CENTURIES OF INVOLVEMENT IN WARS RESULTING IN A VERY LARGE EXCESS OF SINGLE FEMALES IN AGES FROM 30 TO 60.
With so many single females and so many alcoholic men has resulted in millions of educated, beautiful, single ladies looking for husbands as the available local men are a total mess and behave accordingly.
Of course WESTERN ingenuity has jumped at this opportunity and has resulted in hundreds of AGENCIES promoting Russian Or Eastern European Wives VIA Tours for men to Eastern Europe. These agencies are mostly legit and result in a large catalogue of women desperately looking for a real husband and the women tired of living alone are anxious and willing to accept any man that shows interest in them especially if they are from North America or Europe.
These agencies have resulted in many thousands of Eastern European Ladies marrying North American and European men and living happily ever after.
Unfortunately there is another side to this story and that is the STUPIDITY side and the CRIMINAL side who take advantage of the willing beautiful ladies who then end up in Prostitution or with a horrible idiot of a husband.
These are the facts and yes I believe the previous writer that she has had 3000 letters of disasters but that is a very small percentage of over 500 agencies each with over 3-5000 signed and photographed ladies which is a total of over 2,500,000 European ladies and these agencies in the last few years are spreading to South America, Asia and Africa.
As all aspects of life in todays world, nothing is perfect and to make rash statement without first making an attempt at investigating and searching for the facts is not a very wise idea and I think the several million very happy Eastern European now married ladies would not agree with your rash statement and I as a very happy western husband of one these wonderful ladies also do not agree with your reasoning.

I just wanted to say thank you for all the opinions and the information. I just watched the movie on HBO and my reaction was similar to those Americans in the theater- loved the movie yet found myself confused at times...laughed but didn't know exactly why.

I have not read the book but plan to do so now. The grandfather's suicide was sad but I felt as if he did find some peace. He was ready to go.

Death can be a beautiful event in life. He lived this one partially in hiding. Maybe in the next he will be free.

Why do so many organizations in North America want to associate themselves with Communists? I'll never understand...can't they see what Communism has already done?
